About the positionWe are seeking a PhD candidate to perform research on Development of smart management functions in the EU project STEESMAT: «Smart Transformer for Enhanced Efficiency and Sustainability in Maritime Transportation».

The candidate will be supervised by Professor Roger Skjetne with expertise in marine control engineering for ships, incl. optimal energy and emission management of hybrid electric power systems.
Your place of work will be at the Department of Marine Technology.
About the projectThe STEESMAT project, coordinated by Maritime CleanTech, is funded by the Horizon Europe Framework program under grant no. 101192740, within the call: HORIZON-CL5-2024-D5-01 Clean and competitive solutions for all transport modes, and under the specific topic no. 14 Demonstrating efficient fully DC electric grids within waterborne transport for large ship applications (ZEWT Partnership). The research activity is mainly within work package 4, but with some activities also in work packages 5 and 7. The project is an innovation project, where the primary collaboration partners in relevant work packages are Wärtsilä Norway AS and Sustainable Energy AS.
Duties of the positionThe technical work tasks concern:
- Development of smart algorithms and modules for load prediction and minimization of fuel, energy, and emissions for marine vessels, compared with state-of-the-art rule-based methods as baselines.
- Design of control barrier functions (CBFs) considered for safeguarding control setpoints.
- Dynamic programming and model-predictive control methods to be considered for numerical optimization by an Energy and Emission Management System (EEMS).
- Data-driven AI methods (e.g. Reinforcement Learning and/or Recurrent Neural Networks) to be considered included in the EEMS.
General duties are:
- Complete the doctoral education until obtaining a doctorate, in good collaboration with project partners with experiments conducted at their test facilities.
- Carry out research of good quality within the framework described above.
- Immediate focus on academic publications and popular science dissemination.
- Participate in the research group Marine Energy Systems and Autonomics (MESA) at IMT.
- Participate actively in project meetings and workshops, research stays with relevant project partners, as well as in international conferences.
- Teaching duties to be clarified, if relevant.
Be prepared for changes to your work duties after employment.
Required selection criteriaYou must:
- Have an academically relevant background within marine cybernetics, control engineering, marine technology, or power systems, with strong skills within programming and implementation of control systems.
- Have a master's degree in control engineering or cybernetics (with background in marine technology or power systems) or equivalent. Your course of study must correspond to a five-year Norwegian course, where 120 credits have been obtained at master's level. Master's students can apply, but the master's degree must be obtained and documented before starting the position.
- Have a strong academic background from your previous studies and have an average grade from your Master's degree study, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared to NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be considered if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.
- Meet the requirements for admission to the Faculty of Engineering doctoral program: PhD in Engineering.
- Have excellent English skills (written and oral). Applicants from non-English speaking countries outside Europe must present an official language test report. The acceptable tests are TOEFL, IELTS, and Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE). Minimum scores are:TOEFL: 600 / writing 4.5 (paper-based) or 92 / writing 22 (internet-based)
IELTS: 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic IELTS test accepted)
CAE/CPE: grade B or A.
The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations for the Universities and Colleges Act (university and colleges regulations) and Regulations for the degrees philosophiae doctor (ph.d.) and philosophiae doctor (ph.d.) in artistic development work at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) for general criteria for the position.
Preferred selection criteria- Excellent skills in relevant programming languages, particularly Python and C++, incl. good knowledge on ROS2 (Robot Operating System) and best practice of use of Github.
- Knowledge and skills on methods in numerical optimization, machine learning, as well as knowledge on marine power and control systems.
- Experience and abilities for dissemination of knowledge and skills towards students.

Salary and conditionsIn the position of PhD Candidate, code 1017, your gross salary will normally be NOK 536 200,- per annum depending on qualifications and seniority. A 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund is deducted from the salary.
The employment period is 3 years.
For employment as a PhD Candidate, it is a prerequisite that you gain admission to the PhD programme in Engineering within three months of your employment contract start date, and that you participate in an organized doctoral programme throughout the period of employment.
As an employee at NTNU, it is important that you keep yourself up to date with academic and organizational changes and adapt to them.
For the necessary academic and social interaction, it is a prerequisite that you are physically present and available to the institution on a daily basis.
Your Line Manager is the Head of Department.
The appointment is carried out in accordance with the principles of the State Employees Act, and Export control (legislation that regulates the export of knowledge, technology and services). Candidates who, after assessment of the application and attachments, are considered to be in conflict with the criteria in the latter act, will not be able to be employed.
